Kavala is one of the 13 prefectures of Macedonia. It is located in the southeastern part of the country, bordering the prefectures of Drama, Xanthi and Serres and is washed by the Aegean Sea. It includes the island of Thassos and other neighboring islets.


The prefecture of Kavala is known for its infinite natural beauty, with lush forests, magnificent mountainous landscapes and crystal clear seas. It is home to the ancient gold-bearing Mount Pangaios and the Nestos River, one of the largest wetlands.

The city of Kavala is the capital and the main port of the homonymous prefecture. The port of Kavala is one of the most important in the country with significant commercial and tourist traffic. The modern city of Kavala, with its picturesque districts, is amphitheatrically built on a hill, and brings together many important attractions.

Visit the Imaret Mosque, built in 1817 by Mehmet Ali, and is the most representative Muslim mosque in Greece. Also visit Mehmet Ali's house, in front of which, in the center of Panagia Square, there is a bronze statue of him. The old 16th century domed aqueduct, the Kamares, is an admirable historical monument.

In the rest of the city, you can visit and admire the old tobacco warehouses, the Heroes Monument in the lush municipal garden, the Great Club, the picturesque harbor and the traditional small shops. The city is also adorned with many churches with amazing hagiographies. Such are Agios Pavlos, the Prophet Elias, Agios Silas, as well as the Monastery of Lazariston.


Northeast of Kavala, built at the foot of Mount Paggaio, Eleftheroupoli preserves traditional Macedonian architecture. Here, visit the arcades of the ancient mines, the Paggaio Forest Village and the church of Agios Nikolaos, which was destroyed by fire in 1972.

Nea Peramos is a tourist village, where in addition to the extensive beaches, one can visit the acropolis and the ruins of ancient Oisymi, and the churches of Taxiarches and Agios Athanasios.


Chrysoupoli is located in the center of the Nestos plain. Here is the particularly beautiful forest of the Nestos River, with rich flora and fauna, and the church of Agios Dimitrios, built in 1884.


The archaeological site of Philippi is the most important in Eastern Macedonia. It includes, among other things, an archaeological museum, a Paleolithic settlement, an ancient theater, an acropolis, part of the ancient agora, a sanctuary of Egyptian deities, and the prison of the Apostle Paul.

Kavala has a variety of beaches with crystal blue waters, where you can enjoy the sun, the sea and indulge in water sports. The most famous are: Perigiali, Rapsani, Kalamitsa, Batis, Toska, Palio, Iraklitsa. Many of them have been awarded blue flags.


For lovers of mountain beauty, Mount Pangaio is ideal for explorations and winter sports at its ski center.
